Five Mistakes That Can Derail Your Job Search

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Ruth Anderson No matter how much time and energy you invest in job seeking, critical mistakes can derail your efforts. Consider the following job search scenario. Each of the mistakes described below can put your job search off track, but all are easy to avoid. Mistake #1: Starting with a Handicap Your job search is underway. Time to get out your resume, dust it off, and add your most recent experience Right? Wrong. A strong job search starts with strategizing, and a strong resume should be the vehicle to put your strategy into action. It isn’t enough to dust off an old resume you need a revised resume that is tailored to a specific position and a specific employer. Ask yourself What are the top needs and preferences of this employer? How can you address the employers needs with specific information about your experience, strengths, and accomplishments? And how can you structure your resume to convey this key information in a quick, 30-second scan? To avoid mistake #1, assume that your resume is much more than a personal history that simply needs a little updating. Start with a strategy, and rewrite your resume so that it speaks directly to the interests and concerns of the employer who will read it. Mistake #2: Sending Less-Than-Your-Best Your resume is done, and youve written a cover letter to accompany it. Now youre ready to drop both in the mail in response to a job ad that especially interests you Right? Wrong. Have you first made very sure that youre not sending out less than your best? Many job seekers fail to realize that both the resume and the cover letter are seen as examples of the quality of their work. This means that all aspects of overall quality are important including spelling, grammar, visual layout, organization, and clarity of writing. Errors will stand out like a flashing red light, and anything that makes the resume and cover letter difficult to follow may cause them to be tossed aside. To avoid mistake #2, follow this rule of thumb: Have at least two other people read both your resume and cover letter before you send them out. Tell them your job-search strategy so that they know what you want to communicate to the employer. Mistake #3: Cyber-Regrets The employer has called for an interview! In addition, hes asked that you e-mail a copy of your resume to another person in the company. That’s easy a quick note with a Word attachment Right? Wrong. A casual approach to the computer world can lead to embarrassing mistakes. Regrettably, e-mails usually can’t be called back after clicking on the “send” button. As before, avoid mistake #3 by treating any letter as both an opportunity to convey your qualifications and a sample of your writing. Avoid common e-mail shorthand and short, terse paragraphs the former can come across as “unprofessional” and the latter as impersonal. Finally, to be on the safe side, print out your e-mail and attachment to make sure that all looks well in hard copy. Then send the e-mail to at least one other person, and ask them to review both its content and appearance. Mistake #4: The Missed Opportunity Youve prepared for your interview and thought over all the answers you may have to supply. There’s not much more you can do Right? Wrong. Chances are that at some point in the interview the employer will turn the tables and say: “Do you have any questions?” If you respond by saying “no” or by turning to practical details (”What is your benefits package?”), this will be a missed opportunity. To avoid mistake #4, think of several questions beforehand questions that speak directly to the responsibilities and challenges of the job itself. Employers want to know how you think and what you would be like to work with; your questions are an opportunity to show that you can take on the challenges of the job in a constructive way. Mistake #5: Letting the Ball Drop You had a strong interview, and you’re waiting to hear whether you got the job. At least now you can take a breather while you wait Right? Wrong. Until you have a job offer, assume that it’s up to you to keep the ball in the air. First and foremost, send a thank-you letter to each person who interviewed you, making reference to one or more things that were discussed. Second, follow up at regular Intervals to indicate your continued interest and keep your prospects alive. Its tempting to hang back so that you wont be a bother but the job seeker who lets the ball drop may lose out to the one who is politely and persistently enthusiastic. 2005 Ruth Anderson Ruth Anderson is the owner of Vantage Point Coaching & Consulting and author of WRITE RESUMES WITH CONFIDENCE: How to Create Outstanding Resumes and Have the Confidence to Use Them with Success. Are You Financially Prepared to Have a Baby?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Nathan Dawson Perhaps you are a newly married couple doing some family planning, or you may have just discovered that you have a little surprise coming your way. Whether you are barely trying to get the hang of marriage and money management, or if youre simply looking ahead to a future with a baby in it, a little financial planning will go a long way once your bundle of jubilation comes along. The US Department of Agriculture estimates that a middle income family will spend a bare minimum of $250,000 to raise a child. Yikes! Dont worry! Time is on your side. College wont be for another 18 years, at the very least. But that doesnt mean that you can slack off on saving, either. A financial advisor can help you to realistically assess your income and your debts. More importantly a professional can help you set a realistic budget. Doing this will help you set sensible goals each month. You will find that, rather than go with your impulse to buy that gotta have it item, you will hold off on it a little longer, only to find that something of a much higher priority will come along. Thats the whole idea of saving saying no now so that you can say yes to the important things, later. “Starbucks-China” Blend: A Slam Dunk Grande

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Joseph Pratt Admittedly, there are few genuine cant miss propositions. But Ive got one for you, Starbucks in China. Giant corporations being granted carte blanche in a totalitarian environment are reminiscent of an age when kings granted exclusive licensing for fur trapping. Starbucks has the product, the relationships, and with some nimble campaigning theyll have the ubiquitous branding in no time. It will be game, set, match if it isnt already. China is the emerging powerhouse economy in the world today, but it is not a free-for-all for foreign companies. Many companies, in America and elsewhere, would maintain it to be quite the opposite. China has garnered a reputation for being rather lax in its enforcement of intellectual property laws. Tech companies in particular, such as Microsoft, have been frustrated in seeing their handiwork pirated in China. You may add golf club manufacturers, music companies, movie studios and any number of industries to the list of the aggrieved. And then theres Starbucks, our giant American caffeinery. Im looking at a franchise right now from my office at ICMediaDirect.com in the Empire State Building. Its always busy, filled with sightseers. Did you know that theres a franchise at the Great Wall? Were you aware that Starbucks announced an opening of one of their stores in Beijings Forbidden City, the Chinese were furious? They initially resisted, but quickly got used to it? (I guess the Chinese are just like everyone else.) What does Starbucks have that Calloway Golf doesnt in order to do business like this? A product that you cant reproduce, thats what. You cant fake coffee beans en masse. Thats the cornerstone that guarantees Starbucks success in mainland China. Their CEO, Howard Schultz, has declared China to be their number one priority in terms of growth. Schultz and Starbucks arent shy about their Chinese ambitions. Currently they have about 11,000 stores in 37 countries, including about 375 in China. By 2008 Starbucks expects to derive 20% of their revenue from Chinese locations. Starbucks has a long-term goal of 30,000 stores and some 8,000 in China. This is a ramp-up of truly gigantic proportions. Remember, China is, perhaps in name only, a Communist country. While some of the communist economic policies may have fallen by the wayside, the ministers in Beijing have tightly clung to their power. Starbucks has been fully waved in, green lights, red carpet, welcome wagons the works. This isnt because they think the CEO is a nice guy, but because their product, its distribution channels and everything cant be copied. I could hem and haw all day about this, but theres more proof that the fix is in on behalf of the Seattle based coffee chain. In recent weeks Starbucks has won not one, but two lawsuits in China protecting its intellectual property. Some enterprising, and certainly observant, locals decided to copy elements of Starbucks brand and serve coffee themselves to their fellow countrymen. No dice. Chinese courts ruled in favor of Starbucks. I wonder if the local coffee merchant thought he had a chance? Did the Chinese judge think long and hard about the various merits each side had? Were economic ministers in Beijing curious as to how this case would turn? There was no drama. An accomplished CEO like Schultz wouldnt publicly refer to such lofty goals to succeed in countries like China without knowing he could reach it beforehand. Somebody in Beijing likes them, or again, likes the revenue they generate. It reminds me of a book I recently read on the infamous pirate Captain Kidd. In short, the English crown hired Kidd to rob pirate fleets for profit. While he was at sea, the winds of political change shifted somewhat and he became a scapegoat his trial was a farce. The powers that be needed a quick conviction and Kidd paid with his life. Perhaps the stakes were not as great, but the outcome was just as assured when China ruled in favor of Starbucks against local knockoffs. Okay, so Starbucks has the quality coffee and international distribution channels down, theyve got a golden okay from Beijing, now all they have to do is convince a country with 5,000 years of tea drinking experience that theres something new, something different called coffee. This calls for branding. China is moving towards Westernization, or a more capitalist economy. The growing appetites and expectations of a consumer driven society make the task of Starbucks task easier, especially since their competition is negligible. With the appropriate deals struck in Beijing, its now time for Starbucks to sell themselves to the Chinese people. Heres how theyll win: They are aiming at the young urban Chinese demographic, and store locations are comfortable and offer a social setting a welcome break from cramped apartments. Starbucks locations will serve as Internet user hubs, where socializing and downloading music will be central to the Starbucks Experience. Advertising agencies, like ICMediaDirect.com, will be running seasonal online campaigns (similar to this past Christmas seasons Red Cup campaign in the US) for Starbucks in order to associate the chain with whats hip. Crossing Medias like music downloads and entertainment websites will be crucial. There is a consumer consciousness thats new to capitalist cultures (never leaves, actually) emerging in China thats similar to Russia. Coffee will be the drink of change and through multimedia branding with governmental support; this idea will be solidly reinforced. I dont push stocks. I dont preach politics. Im not searching for justice or defending oppressors. But there is one thing I know Starbucks cant miss. Government Grants For Farmland Improvement

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Eric Morris The government issues certain grants for land categories like historic areas, open spaces, natural areas and farmlands. These grants are meant for their preservation or reform. Agriculture is very deep-rooted in America, but the recent suburban upheaval has cost these lands dearly. Lands are evaluated according to the quality of the soil and the status of the irrigation. Government funds are distributed to farmers to reform and preserve farmland as well as improve the infrastructure. They allow farmers to farm as they deem fit. The funds are also meant for improvements like irrigation, fencing and manure storage facilities. Farmers can also develop land reform plans and implement them with the funds received. Some of the funds also have aid programs attached to them, which provide farmers with the kind of facilities and help that are needed to protect their land. Most states also use the agricultural conservation easement as a common farmland protection method. This permits landowners to put a voluntary restriction on their land, which stops development or limits it to enable the land to preserve its natural resources. There are no minimum or maximum grant award levels for individual grants. Any amount can be available for farmland improvements, policy and planning combined. Some of these programs include partnership developments with parties that are interested and can bring in enough resources for the implementation of the projects. The grants give more preference to such ventures. Applications for the distribution of funds are based on the amount of matching funds and similar services. It is also important to maintain all records pertaining to the grant until the state makes the final payment. This is required so that all information will be handy when the time comes to determine the total cost. A typical example of a farmland improvement grant is the California Farmland Conservancy program. Government Grants provides detailed information on Government Grants, Free Government Grants, Government Business Grants, Debt Relief Government Grants and more. Government Grants is affiliated with Federal Government Grants. Tips on Dealing With Women

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Gary Brodsky Knowing how to deal with women is one of the most important life skills anyone can have these days. Here’s a list of what NOT to do with women EVER. 1) Do not fight with her. Fighting always creates tension and kills attraction. Fighting with a woman is useless. Even if you win the argument, you will still lose the war. 2) Do not try to use logic to show her why she should come be with you. Attraction and sexuality is based on feelings, not logic. No matter how brilliant your logic is, she’s still going to leave you, with women logic does not win you anything but the door. 3) Do not reassure any woman that you will change, that old things will be “different from now on”. It’s like trying to its a sign that you are conforming to what you believe to be her view of you. You will loose her and loose your self in the process. 4) Do not keep telling her you love her. She won’t care. All a woman cares about is how much she loves you…not the other way around!) 5) Do not beg her to come back. The more you beg, the more she will ignore you. 6) Do not try to make her feel guilty about leaving you. (Examples: “I can’t work without you.” and “Don’t break up with me during exam period…”) It won’t work. It will only make her dread being with you even more. 7) Do not act depressed so they will feel bad for you. Sympathy does not equal attraction! 8) Do not talk to her friends to win their support. All she cares is how SHE feels about you. Even if her friends love you, they can’t make her love you forever. External pressure never lasts longer. If your girl decides to stay with you, her motivation has to come from within. 9) Do not spend money on gifts and flowers for her. You can’t buy her heart back with money. There is nothing more expensive then cheap woman. 10) Do not push her into getting back with you. The moreyou push, the more she will pull away. Here is a list of what to DO with women1) COMPLIMENT her whenever you feel she looks her best, smells her best, feels her best and especially feels her worst. Because women are junkies for compliments. You keep feeding them compliments and they will keep coming back. And always stagger compliments because you need to keep the suspense when the compliments are coming. This is really important, this is how dogs and dolphins are trained, works great for women too. Dont forget to compliment details, hands, jewelry, and clothing. 2) Try and do something she has never done before. Something new and exciting. Adventure is something women look for in men. Keep her wondering what you will do. 3) Stay mysterious. Women get bored if they know everything about you. Be unpredictable at all times. Never let her know what your feelings are about her. Let her write her own fantasies because it will be much greater than anything you try to instill. 4) Always look and smell your best, no matter where you go and what you do. Women love to smell cologne on a man, it reminds them of you whenever they smell that same cologne. Smell is primal and all the politically correct media hype cannot erase 3.9 billion years of evolution. 5) Always be fun. Most guys are morose and depressed. Everybody always wants to be where the fun is. 6) Talk about your family and friends. Women love to know you are a caring, considerate, loving guy. 7) Make her feel like shes the most important person when you are with her. Dont give her too much confidence; just make sure she feels that she is the center of attention when you are with her. 8) Look in her eyes whenever you talk to her. When men look away women look at it as they are afraid, and unsure of themselves. Let her know that you are confident. A study done on cult leaders there was one common denominator found among all the cult leaders including Charles Manson is they always smile. 9) Hold her hand, as much as you can. It makes a woman feel that you title her as your girl. They enjoy it and feel that you are in control. Women cannot handle being in control of a relationship, date, or encounter. You must take control. 10) Always have a plan. Never leave anything up to her or up in the air. Women get bored easily. My name is Gary Brodsky. I wrote the best-selling booksThe Foolproof Guide to Picking Up Women andHow to Dominate Women. How to Set Goals to Meet, Date, Attract, and Seduce More Women

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Don Diebel I highly recommend that you set goals to meet, date, attract, and seduce single women. This will help to focus your mind on succeeding with women and get you more dates. Here are a few dating tips to help you achieve your goals: Focus all of your attention, desire and energy in accomplishing your goal at hand. Forget completely about any consequences of failure with single women. Remember that you usually get what you think about most. When you start on your goal, concentrate all of your energy without any distractions on the successful completion of your goal. Make reaching your goal an all-consuming obsession. Develop a self-talk vocabulary to reach your goal of scoring with single women. Make it a habit to repeat again and again to yourself, “I want to - I can” in regards to scoring with all those women you desire. Substitute the word “Try” with the word “Will” in your vocabulary associated with meeting, dating, attracting, and seducing women. This is a form of semantics and creates a new attitude of concentrating on things that you “Will do,” instead of things you plan to “Try,” with a built-in excuse in advance for possible failure. Substitute the word “Can’t” with the word “Can” in your daily vocabulary, too. Always tell yourself you “Can” do things you set your mind to. In conclusion, set your goals and go for it! Happy Hunting! This article written by Don Diebel (Americas #1 Singles Expert). The History of the Nokia Tune

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Nicolas_Fogelholm]Nicolas Fogelholm You can find a lot of writings about ringtones, the ringtone history and stories about the famous Nokia Tune. Heres the history of the Nokia Tune. It all started in the year 1993 and with the launch of Nokia’s 2100 series. The new Nokia 2100 phones were more advanced than previous Nokia’s and had more than 20 pre installed ringtones. Anssi Vanjoki (today Nokia’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia) suggested that one of the pre installed ringtones could be Nokia’s own ringtone. His proposal for the so called Nokia tune was Francisco Trrega’s (1852-1909) “Gran Vals”. The Gran Vals was also at that time used on Nokia TV-commercials. Anssi Vanjoki gave the notes of the Gran Vals to Lauri Kivinen (Corporate Communications) and tried to sell the idea of a Nokia Tune to him. At first Kivinen thought it quite unnessecary for a phone to have several ringtones. Hadnt people been doing just fine with one ringtone? Despite skepticism things were developed furher in Oulu, Finland, where Nokia ringtones were developed. In 1994, the Nokia 2100 series phones were launched and the Nokia tune could bee heard all over the world. The Nokia 2100 series was a success story, planning to sell 400 000, but sold 20 million! Home School Your Children?

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Ethan Mettaroy More and more parents are choosing to home school their children. They do so for a variety of reasons. Some feel they can give their children a better education at home, that the uniform teaching methods required for classes of 30 or 40 students do not sufficiently account for each students different learning styles and aptitudes. Others home school for religious reasons, preferring to include religious information in the curriculum, which is not found in public schools. Still others prefer to inform their children about various education topics from their own point of view, rather than what they would receive in public schools. Some parents may be choosing home schooling because they fear for their childrens safety. We do hear many reports of violence in our schools. Obviously, home schooling is not new. Public schools are really the new kid on the block. According to Patrick Farenga, in his article A Brief History of Homeschooling, compulsory education, as we know it, is less than 200 years old. He points out that education used to be handled by parents, the church and the occasional tutor for special subjects. He also mentions that education was intentionally left up to parents by our founding fathers. There is no mention of it in the Declaration, Bill of Rights or the Constitution of the United States. Farenga dates the current trend toward home schooling from the 1970s, particularly from a book called Deschooling Society, written by Ivan Illich that year. You can find his article at www.hsc.org, which features many, such articles and resources for home schooling. There is also a page of home schooling jokes. Some of them are hilarious. If you are considering home schooling your own children, you can find many more resources on the web. There are articles, curriculums, stories from other parents, textbook recommendations, school projects, and more. Home schooling families usually interact with other home schooling families so that children do get social time with other children. They may get together to put on a play, practice music or learn a sport. It seems like there is a good chance that home schooling is a trend that will only increase over the coming years. Check hslda.org for information on home schooling laws in your home st About this writer -Ethan Mettaroy is a self-made expert on home schooling and has, with his wife, home schooled their own 7 children, 3 of whom they adopted.
