By Tim Grimsley The key to a slim waist is knowing how to attack the fat in this problem area. Most people try to slim their waistline with targeted exercises, such as crunches and torso twists. This is certainly not a bad idea, but the truth is to get the best results you must develop a well rounded plan. In order to see great results from your hard work you need to turn on your body’s fat furnace. This will start a process that will burn the fat 24 hours per day. When you are burning fat all day you will see the results that you only dream about. First we will look at exercise. When you are looking to burn fat, two types of exercise is necessary. The first is muscle building. Getting rid of unwanted fat requires that you build more muscle. I’m not talking about toning, there is a difference. Toning does not involve the addition of new muscle cells. Some examples of muscle building exercise is weight lifting, or any type of resistance exercises. You will only burn more calories daily by increasing the amount of muscle cells that need the calories for energy. You will also need to add some form of aerobic exercise at least twice a week. This will improve your bodies use of oxygen. This a vital part of your plan, because oxygen use is necessary to burn fat from the body. Some examples are walking, jogging, and rowing. The benefits of aerobic exercise go far beyond the issue of losing weight. It is an excellent help for many health problems. Lastly we need to look at your diet. In order to really optimize your fat loss it is very important to reduce your carbohydrates. This is because our bodies use carbs for it’s first source of energy. If we eat too many carbs, our body will never kick into the fat for energy mode. We will also have to cut our intake of total calories. Most people are eating far to many calories. There is a new product that has recently made it a lot easier. Hoodia Gordonii is a powerful appetite suppressant, has no side effects, and is all natural. By James Ross Coin collecting is not a hobby that you can learn over night. It takes time to do, but if you have the passion for it it is well worth doing and something you will get a lot out satisfaction from. If you only collect coins as an investment it may work for a while but soon enough you will give up because like anything in life there bumps along the way and if you do not have the passion to see them through this might put you off persisting with it. To be successful you need to take in as much information on coin collecting as you can. Reading magazines, subscribing to on line or off line newsletters and talking to dealers are good sources of finding and gathering information. On the net you can find lots of news sites that relay the latest information as it happens. Using these resources effectively will make you a successful collector, but trying to collect without applying the basics will lead you to failure. You must learn to know what is the value of the coins so grading coins is a skill you need to learn as soon as you can. This is a skill you will need if you intend to trade coins for greater valued coins when the opportunity arises, as well as making sure that you never get scammed. Patience is a prerequisite for a successful coin collector. The best collectors in the world have often waited years for the opportunity to buy a coin they wanted for their collection. Less patient collectors have been known to buy a fake coins to complete their collection simply because of their impatience and this can be costly and disheartening. Gaining the mentality of a successful coin collector is something you should strive to achieve. Being too eager can make you rush into buying without checking up on the coin you are wanting to add to your collection. So always make sure you trust the source you buy from or that the information you received about a coin you received is also genuine and trust worthy. Starting out in coin collecting can be initially hard to do but if you study the market carefully for at least 3 to 6 months to get the basics right, then when you start trading for real you will not make the same mistakes many new comers make. When starting out and throughout your coin collecting hobby you need to set goals every step of the way. Never run before you can walk is a phrase that applies very well to this hobby. Learning and applying the basic slowly and steadily will make you an expert in the long run and you will reap the benefits by becoming a successful coin collector if not a rich one. By Vijay Bhat Feel somehow your life is stuck in MS-OFFICE The reality of life for MBAs is Excel or PowerPoint , I heard Google is catching up at campus. Having gone through this myself, (I am still not out of it!), having had the nightmare of freshly minted MBAs reporting to me every year ( 90% of MBAs in their first job believe that their first Boss in Incompetent) and struggling to manage their transition to reality, guess I am now in a position to give some Gyan on assessing your job and career moves. I crystallized these thoughts while discussing these situations with a friend of mine, her issues with the first job where similar to what most of you would be facing. Job!! Money !! or Career !! 1. Money is not Important: - I do not actually mean it, not that I am asking you to struggle through an insipid low paying job. I did that for almost a year. But the rules of taxation are such that anybody earning between Rs.5.00 Lakhs to Rs. 10.00 Lakhs per annum ends up more or less with a similar quality of life. So if you are just switching jobs for a few thousand more, think twice, it may not be worth it. Do not concentrate on money right now. It is not too difficult to make money. But nobody is going to pay you a higher salary because you ask for it, organizational decision making processes are far too complex. It is not how hard you work or how you please the boss that matters! I tried this for a couple of years to no effect. The crux of the matter is what Value you are delivering to the organization, if the Organization as a whole (at least the people who matter) sees you deliver value they have no option but to pay for it. 2. Evaluate Payoffs: - Any Company or everybody pays you to get a job done. The choice you have to make is whether you really want to do that Job. Here what you need to check is- are you emotionally enjoying the job. I have seen guys struggling through high-pressure and stressful sales jobs, because of incentives, commissions and Quarterly conference at plush location when they would be much happier doing a less glamorous job that they would enjoy. This is also seen in situations when people are stuck in so called Corporate Office positions assisting the Senior Management with their Excel or PowerPoint, although there is a glamour attached to being in the Corporate Office etc, check whether you are actually adding to your skills. You would be better off on the Shop Floor or Field Sales at a younger age. 3. Is the job utilizing your time or adding to your skill sets: - Skill sets are both technical and behavioral. For example if your talking of a Demand Planning job, a Demand Planner who has worked on SCM packages like i2 or Oracle APO/SAP APS will at the end of the day have skills which are highly valued in the job market, but not demand planning done in “Excel”. Behavioral Skill sets are complex to explain but you know the usual set like Team Working, Leadership etc etc. This happens when the job offers you opportunity to meet a lot of professionals. Sometimes you choose a job if you find it adds to Behavioral Skill - after my engineering I opted to work as a Sales Person living on full commission for 6 months before my MBA, because that was a Skill I wanted and maybe because at the age 21 you can afford to take the risk. 4. What is Work Environment /Ambiance offering you: This is particularly important for youngsters. The world around us is changing, there are a lot of Indian companies, which are changing, valuing performance instead of loyalty, having global ambitions etc. Yet there are a lot of companies who are still stuck in the protectionist economy morass. Another method of evaluation is looking at lifecycle of the Company and the Products it sells. If a company operates in a Mature or a declining market, it changes the whole worldview of the organization. The operations of these organizations would be tuned to maximizing returns in a mature or declining market through Cost Reductions- this always has cascading effect, Pay Packets, Promotions, Training Budgets or Publicity Budgets. At individual performance level, getting a 1% change in market share in a mature market is an extremely difficult job, so you may be actually struggling and putting in your best with minimal results, which can be very demoralizing. Also there are certain businesses or kinds of industries, which attract a particular kind of people. Although at the first instance you may not realize it, in the long term you realize a cultural dissonance. In such scenarios it would you to shift immediately, if you culturally do not fit in the organization, there are three things that may happen: a) You will never grow because you would at a cultural level be an outsider b) You change yourself to make yourself culturally acceptable to the organization and repent that decision c) You would have morphed so much trying fit yourself to the culture that you become unfit for any other organization That in short is my line of thinking. It is quiet contrary to conventional thinking of running after Money and Position. Concentrate only on adding to your Skills Sets and Experiences. The Economy is currently booming there are new opportunities being thrown up both for professionals and entrepreneurs. So if you have the right mix of skills and experiences making money is not difficult. In fact there are a number of companies who have kept important positions vacant. In the Economic Time dated 19th March 2005, it was reported that the position of Vice-President(Sales & Marketing) of Indias largest two wheeler manufacturer has been kept vacant for more than 6 months. Amazing isnt it considering that so many marketing MBAs are minted every year. Most importantly you should remember that all this is not very important. Career is only a means to maintain a Lifestyle and living it up is more important. By James Burchill Develop These Six Critical Marketing Traits…And Success Will Surely Follow. If you are marketing for any other reason than for profit STOP! Thats right, stop right now. The only reason you market your business is to cause action: make more sales, make the phone ring (and make more sales), make someone visit your website (and make more sales) Are you seeing a pattern here? Good. The root of all marketing is to sell more stuff and make more money thats it. And heres the definition of marketing: Marketing is all about positively influencing your customers buying decisions so that they choose you. Trait #1: Notice Your Own Buying Strategies Remember, its about influencing buying decisions, so pay attention to the way the world tries to sell you. Watch for the really good sales pitches, and pay even closer attention to the really bad ones. Pickup magazines read the ads, watch TV surf the commercials, join mailing lists and hoard junk mail, and when you get telemarketing calls listen to them carefully because all this stuff is pure gold. Notice billboards, look at pictures (paying special attention to your industry sector) and just for fun, read the Yellow Pages to whats going on in your area. If you pay attention to what catches your attention, what ads you keep seeing, what radio commercials you keep hearing, youll start to find things you can incorporate into your own business model. Trait #2: Cross-Pollinate Business Ideas Nothing about flowers here this is powerful marketing 1-0-1. Cross-pollination is all about taking a proven idea from one industry and borrowing it for yours. Essentially you need to get a little creative with ideas and throw things together that might not normally seem to make sense. Borrow ideas from everywhere. See if you can sell your products and services the same way cell phones are sold, what about selling your products like groceries, get creative break the mould. Get yourself out of your paradigm of “what you do” and realize that, as long as it’s legal, moral, and ethical, if a given idea makes money, then pursue it. Trait #3: Be Specific Lets not get into how people are generally lazy communicators suffice to say that 99% of whats said in marketing and advertising is hyperbole, fluff, non-specific, non-compelling, boring, and flat. Words like best quality, best service, largest selection, #1 and lowest price abound do you think this stuff really works? People expect you to claim youre great no one spends money to promote theyre bad at anything! Quantify your claims, be specific. Instead of saying largest selection of parts, say We carry 1,478 types of part in stock, in 10 different sizes, and in 3 different finishes. Trait #4: Look At Things From Your Customer’s Perspective If youve ever bought anything that you knew nothing about, you ought to relate to this. Put yourself in your customers shoes find out what they feel about the whole buying process (remember marketing = influencing) and create an environment that sympathetically addresses their issues. Trait #5 Adapt And Innovate Even if youre the best deal in town today you might not be tomorrow. After all, the only thing a competing business needs to do is watch you, copy you, and then improve on your offers and service. Constant innovation is required, adapt or perish as they saying goes. Innovation is a process not a destination. The object is to create a business that offers your customer a deal so perfect that theyd be a fool to shop anywhere else. Trait #6 Systemize Everything You Can Systemization is the process of making decisions about your marketing in advance so that you are always doing what needs to be done. Instead of trying to create everything as you go, or worse, flying by the seat of your pants and wondering what to do next. Plan, excute, adjust, repeat. And thats it. Six traits that will get you moving in the right direction. AUTHOR BIO: James Burchill is a freelance marketing consultant and publisher. By Shawn LeBrun Although I feel the best approach to losing fat is a long term one, there are some simple things you can do to drop fat quickly. You primarily do it by increasing the amount, duration, and/or intensity of your cardio sessions while slowly decreasing your calorie intake. If you try and shed fat too fast, whatever you did to lose it will not be permanent and you’ll more than likely end up gaining the weight back. The best way to lose any amount of fat quickly is to focus on creating more of a calorie deficit in which your body is forced to burn more fat for energy. This is primarily achieved by slowly cutting your calorie intake and slowly increasing your cardio input. Notice how I put “slowly” in front of both. If you start reducing calories too quick, you’ll force your body into “starvation mode” in which it starts holdingonto stored body fat instead of burning it for energy. And if you start doing too much cardio too soon, you’ll run the risk of overtraining or getting injured. What about weight training? The weight training remains a constant in this equation. It has little to do with losing fat fast. In fact, you may want to lessen the weight training the next few weeks and instead focus more on the cardio, which will have more of an impact on the fat burning. Bottom line, to lose any amount of fat fast, you have to burn more calories than you consume. The best way to do this is by dropping your daily calorie intake while increasing your daily cardio output. The first week, start getting rid of extras that you may eat, like dressings, oils, butter, sugars, syrups, and desserts. Then the next week, reduce your calories again by 150-200 calories. This slow, methodical drop in calories will not trigger “starvation mode” in which your body will start holding onto fat. Also, you’ll want to start upping the amount and/or intensity of your cardio. If you’re doing 2 or 3 sessions of cardio a week, add another session. If you’re already doing 4 or 5, then increase your intensity more so than your time. The combo of slowly dropping your daily calories while also increasing the intensity and amount of your cardio will get you in a fat-burning stage. Then, continue on with this approach and soon you’ll be staring in the mirror at a leaner, more muscular you. By Bob Alexander “If you can’t catch a fish on St. George Island, you’re stupid!”, the man running the bait shop told me as I bought fishing license, bait shrimp and a fishing cap. “You can catch trout. The pompano are running now so you might catch a couple of them. Good eating.” he said as he tallied up my bill. “Over on the bay side in the state park, you can hang into some good redfish!” Carefully carrying my free coffee from the bait shop my tackle I had just bought in the other, I walked outside to bask in the early morning sunshine on St. George Island, Florida. The island is less than a mile wide at its widest point. Located across the bay from Apalachicola and East Point, this was my vacation spot for one glorious sun filled week. St. George Island State Park was only a mile down the beach from where I was staying. This end of the island was only about mile wide with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Apalachicola Bay on the other. The bay side was where I spent most of my time fishing for Redfish and Trout. During that week I discovered that I was not stupid at all! Not by a long shot! Redfish, for those who don’t know such things, are the salt water fish with the black spot on their tails. There are redfish tournaments all over the gulf coast. I saw my first one on TV one Sunday morning. The professionals were using a $30,000 boat, rod and reels that were at least a couple of hundred dollars apiece, trolling motor and an expensive array of artificial bait. They caught several keeping sized redfish! I was hooked! I knew where I was going on my vacation! I used my Walmart $39.95 rod and reel special with a $2.95 silver lure and had a ball. Here’s how I did it! Florida State Parks open at 8:00am. I was there when the gate opened and made my way to the boat ramp on the bay side of the island. It wasn’t much of a ramp, but then it didn’t need to be for me since I didn’t have a boat. A lot of the park was still being renovated after the hurricanes of 2005, thus this shallow ramp. After watching a couple of small skiffs enter the water, I talked with a fisherman in a kayak waiting his turn to launch. He said that he was going after redfish with a golden spoon. After he paddled off, I looked in my tackle box for a gold spoon but couldn’t find one. I had two silver spoons that I hung onto my fishing vest and waded into the water. I also had a fish carrying net hooked onto my vest in case I got lucky and actually caught a fish. Looking out over the bay as I left the beach and walked along a path that had been cut into the weeds guarding the edge of the water, I saw numerous small spits of land emerging from the bottom of the bay. I recognized I was wading around the edges of oyster bars. The bottom was smooth, but as you walked closer to the little islands, small oysters were every where. Luckily I had my rubber water shoes on or I would have cut my feet on the shells. The depth of the bay at this end of the island was from 2′ to 4′ no matter where I waded. I tied on a silver spoon and cast it in the deeper water closer to the weeds. Cranking rapidly on the reel handle, something hit the lure. It felt like I had hooked onto a concrete block. Setting the drag on the reel, I let the fish take the line, reeling slowly as he began to tire. In a few minutes I had him. I had caught my first redfish and he was a beauty. I measured his length with a fabric tape measure I kept in my fishing vest; 17 inches long. Not good enough. The legal size of redfish is from 18″ to 27″. Anything smaller or larger than those measurements would get you in trouble with the game wardens. During my week on the island I had heard they were everywhere, looking for any fisherman who had a fish that was shy of those measurements by even a quarter inch. I took no chances, letting my redfish go. I caught several redfish that morning and they were all fun. The next three were keepers, but alas, you could only keep one in your possession at any time, so I kept the biggest in my mesh sack until it was time to go. Cleaning the fish seemed to be more trouble than it was worth, so I let him go also. All in all, my first morning on the bay was great! By Alevoor Rajagopal Interview and career planning gurus are flooding my mail box. Some one please help me! This is the frantic expression I heard over a highschool campus. At least some of you must have been receiving those so called gurus’ mails. The way they flood inboxes makes you rethink whether to continue with their service at all. But Hold A Minute! Most of us use free email boxes. More over, the latest ones provide you unlimited inbox space. Still you want to unsubscribe career planner mails or interview tips? After all none of them spam just as such, unless you had subscribed at some point of time. Getting hired is not the end of career! Bureau of labor statistics (bls.gov) says almost all ordinary Americans change careers every 3-4 years. The job market is not a stagnant water anymore. Look at what happens when job market changes. The market demands new or improved products whichcan be you but only if you upgraded yourself regularly. But you can’t be a surgeon after being an accountant for 25 years Nothing is lost if you can’t. But look at how the world is moving and how fast. Keeping abreast with change is posible through various routes. I regard free mail updates and interview call letters as one of them. Career counselors and recruitment experts have researched and what they mail you is not all junk. Recruitment and HR managers want to share the latest If there was nothing more than hot gas, they would be out of business quickly.
